“I moved to San Luis Obispo in 1999 after marrying my husband Derek, a local commercial real estate agent. I enrolled in the graduate program at Cal Poly and earned a Master’s degree, which led to a career of teaching English at Cal Poly. I endeavored to give my students a great education while making my classes fun. Yet I have always been drawn to entrepreneurial pursuits, and when I felt my head butting up against the adjunct-professor glass ceiling, it was time for a change. Thus began my real estate career. I think my enterprising nature comes from the fact that, since a very young age, I have had to look out for myself. I worked fast food jobs in high school to pay for my own braces; I waited tables to put myself through college; I sold advertising to used car dealers to put myself through graduate school. I am a hard worker. It wasn’t all drudgery though because I’m a natural-born optimist who loves people!
I’m grateful for the life I have here in San Luis Obispo. I have two wonderful sons about to go to college; I frequently hike the trails in our green space; and many a morning you can find me bobbing in the sharky waters of Montana de Oro State Park looking for a wave to catch. I also enjoy working for KCBX, our local public radio station, where I have produced several news segments about our community. Last year I published my first book—Murray: A Novel—set in 19th century New York City. I love to work. As Susan Sontag, a fellow Capricorn put it: Work is more fun than fun.
